Calgary Celebrating the Sesquicentennial

To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation, the Government of Canada is funding many community activities and projects from coast to coast across Canada. Calgary will receive over $640,000.00 in funding on many community projects for Calgarians to enjoy and participate in Canada’s Sesquicentennial.

Throughout the year, Canada 150 festivities are a great opportunity for Calgarians to connect with one another and celebrate our country’s accomplishments, while enjoying events and initiatives to honour our country’s history and heritage. Even Mayor Nenshi has challenged Calgarians to give our nation back a gift of three things—three acts of service in 2017.

If your New Year’s resolution was to get in shape, now would be a great time to start preparing for the Calgary Marathon on May 27. Maybe as one of your acts of service gift you could become a Calgary Marathon volunteer. There are many events that are looking for volunteers, and wouldn’t that be a great way to give back to and connect with our communities.

The celebrations for 2017 began on December 31, 2016 with Olympic Plaza lit up with ice carvings and fire spinning while enjoying skating or a run down the ice slide listening to music from several bands, including the popular Canadian band 54.40. Across the street in the Municipal Building, the kids were enjoying the popular children’s dance party and creating crafts and counted down the New Year at 9 pm. It all climaxed at midnight with a fantastic firework display.

A great way to connect with the people in your community is to go out and enjoy the Free Winter Fun Day happening Saturday January 28th, 2017 from 11 am to 3 pm. There will be outdoor ice skating, nature education games with hot refreshments and music to enjoy by a toasty fire. Enjoy Winter Fun Day in your area of city at either Big Marlborough Park (6033 Madigan Dr. N.E.), Bowness Park (8900 48 Ave. N.W.), Carburn Park (67 Riverview Drive S.E.), Confederation Park, Rosemont Community Association (2807 10 Street N.W.), or Prince’s Island Park (4 Street & 1 Ave. S.W.).

To help encourage building communities and participation in Canada’s sesquicentennial many organizations, communities and events in Calgary received funding from the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th Birthday. Calgarians can enjoy Canada’s 150th Birthday all year long.
Historic Calgary City Hall is the only surviving regional example of the monumental civic halls that were erected in several Prairie cities before 1930. This is why city hall was designated as a historic building by the province in 1978, a national historic site in 1984, and as Calgary’s first municipal heritage resource in 1991.
