Canada 150 Celebrations Continue to Bloom

As Spring encourages renewal and birth, many more of Canada’s Sesquicentennial Celebrations also begin to blossom. The Canadian, Provincial, and Civic governments have all contributed to helping Canadians to develop a wide range of unique projects where we can discover and explore the spirit of our great nation. The upgrading of Olympic Plaza with the Canada 150 logo indicates that Calgary is a big part of it, with many events and activities happening right here in Calgary.

If you enjoy performing, you can dance your way into Canada’s 150th Confederation Celebrations. All Canadians are invited to join the movement at the Wildflower Arts Centre for free dance lessons designed for preparation for the Sharing Dance Day on June 02 in Calgary. This community imitative, offered by Canada’s Ballet School, is one of five national Signature Official Sharing Dance Day Events happening across Canada.

One can always explore the many cultures that make up our great country, and even Calgary, this month by enjoying cultural performances highlighting different regions within Asia.This being Asian Heritage Month, Calgarians can discover the colourful Asian culture at Calgary’s Multi-cultural facility, the Genesis Centre’s, on May 27th, 2017. Along with 50 displays and 10 ‘live’ exhibits the main feature is the ‘150 Stories’ exhibit. Enjoy the performances of Japanese Taiko drummers, Indian Bhangra, a Chinese Lion Dance and other Asian entertainment.

More Signature Canada 150 events continue to happen throughout Canada’s 150th birthday at the Genesis Centre. With June being National Aboriginal History Month, the Genesis Centre is devoting the month to creating awareness around Aboriginal History. An Indigenous Round Dance Celebration on June 11th, 2017 will have informative displays touching on the history of the culture, Truth and Reconciliation components, and celebratory aspects such as a traditional Round Dance, tipi’s, and cultural food. June 22nd, you can take part of a conference of engaging speakers, panel discussion, and performance aspects to shed light on the social issue of Truth and Reconciliation.

The Signature Canada 150 events continue in Calgary with multiple venues celebrating theatre for young audiences. Join over 50,000 people at the Olympic Plaza Free Stage and a host of interactive activities, along with award-winning theatre presented in the Arts Common. There is something for everyone at the Calgary International Children’s Festival from May 24th to 27th, 2017.

There are going to be so many activities and events celebrating Canada’s Sesquicentennial leading up to the main event on Canada Day. One shouldn’t have an issue finding something that is of interest where you can become part of the excitement. Just by going out and enjoying the local activities you are contributing to the movement of making a difference. You are supporting your local community and merchants, which leads to a more prosperous economy and a better existence for all. Make a M.A.D. Move.

Even though the city is permitting backyard suites, commonly referred to as garage/garden suites, or laneway homes, we still have the issue of owning a smaller lot. A possible solution, using current bylaws, is to establish a co-operative on owning the land between tiny house homeowners.
