Become Part of the Community

It is human nature that people, whether they are extroverts or introverts, need to connect with others with whom they share common interests for the development of their mental health and wellbeing.  A greater sense of happiness usually develops when one feels they belong, especially when participating in a community. Any group of people that interact with each other that have some common interest, social connection, needs, or location is a community.

Calgary is divided into neighbourhoods, and most of these have a community association you could join. Just by going to the events put on by your local community association, and also any neighbourhood fundraisers sponsored by non-profit organizations, charities, and businesses, gives you the opportunity to get out and socialize with the people you encounter every day.

You can also be part of the community by volunteering, become employed by the association, or become a board member and help with the success of the sponsored events and activities and association.

Successful events help improve our local economy by keeping the wealth earned in Calgary in our local economy. Studies have shown that the value of the money that is retained locally is worth at least 3 times the value compared to the money that leaves our city. No matter which way you participate with your local community associations you are making a difference and improving your wellbeing.

Don’t forget about your other neighbours whom are not participating in the community. When they walk by, or you meet them on the street, be sure to say hi and introduce yourself and socialize. Don’t forget to encourage your new friend to also become part of the community. Check out your local Calgary Library branch, churches, and even your local politician and discover the many ways you can become part of the community.

Join the M.A.D. Movement and Make A Difference in your community while cultivating your wellbeing.  Become part of a community with something that you enjoy. Select something that is of interest and it will be much more enjoyable and relaxing helping one cope more efficiently with the normal stresses of today’s hectic lifestyles. Do yourself a favour and become part of the community. As the Tiny House movement becomes a growing phenomenon reflecting the change in society towards affordable sustainable living, governmental rules and regulations are a hindrance preventing it to flourish. Even though the City of Calgary has amended bylaws to accommodate certain tiny houses (laneway homes), there has been no advancement in the development of tiny house properties.
