The Rivers District New Arena Debate

The revitalization of the East Village with the new vision for the Victoria Park Arts and Cultural District includes a much-debated sports arena. Results from the Phase One: Engagement Summary of the Beltline Area Redevelopment Plan reveals that the city heard people want a culture and entertainment district that is more than just sporting and entertainment venues. It should also include a diverse variety of shops, restaurants, places to gather (like plazas and patios) and good green spaces. Is another sports facility needed here? And at what expense? In the process, Calgary will be losing part of its iconic skyline, the historic Saddledome.

Recently, while Council was discussing a draft of negotiating terms for the new arena, they voted 11-4 on a strategy to fund a total of four major capital projects to be completed over the next decade. An estimated +$1.5 billion for expansion to the BMO Centre, phase one of an expansion of Arts Commons, a new arena, and construction of a new multi-sport field house. The arena alone would be 40% of the cost, stretching the city budget almost to its limits.

The “Phase One: Engagement Summary and what we heard” citizens choice in fourth place was a desire for arts, entertainment, culture and music spaces at 8% compared to Sports fields at 15th place with only 2% of the vote. A less expensive multi-purpose entertainment venue may be a better choice and less of a tax burden on citizens. Moving sports to another area would help alleviate traffic congestion in Victoria Park.

A new multi-sports facility is something Calgary does need, however, Council should look at alternative options, along with studies, to build facilities with growth and expansion in mind. How will mobility be affected with all the existing East Village and Victoria Park development and the new facilities? Other neglected areas downtown could also use rehabilitation. Perhaps a new multi-sports and fieldhouse facility would be better suited in the underdeveloped West End. Revisiting the Calgary Next Sports Centre may be a better idea.

What is the vision you would like for Calgary? City Council was voted in to support what the citizens want. If you feel the new arena would be good for the Rivers District then support it. On the other hand, do you want to see the iconic Saddledome go? Should we consider other options and locations for a sports facility? Voice your opinion. Join the M.A.D.
