The Past Present and Future of Public Art
In James Short Park located Downtown at 115, 4th Ave. SW is a limestone sculpture that represents the progression of people through time. Gernot Kiefer's The Past, Present and Future public art roughly resembles a human head with marks on its surface intended to represent periods of time.
The rough surface near the base of the sculpture suggests the rough challenges of the distant past. The suggestion that the present is a more complex and perhaps less challenging way of life than of the past is represented by marks placed closer together near the middle of the sculpture incorporating sections of smooth stone. The smoothness at the upper portion of the sculpture proposes many possibilities in the future questioning what will humans do next.
Gernot Kiefer was a local Calgarian artist, who recently passed away in May of 2018 peacefully. He was known for his deep faith, love for his family and a great sense of humour with a laugh that was contagious and easily recognizable in a large crowd.
