Unfortunately, there are not as many events in Canada as there are in other parts of the world. Locally in Cremona, they are holding an Earth Day in the Park featuring a hazardous household chemical round up and Village clean up along with tree planting and birdhouse building. Okotoks will Celebrate Earth Day with Growing Veggies 101 and Medicine Hat holds its annual Earth Day Litter Clean up.

Be sure to check out that the events are still happening because they may be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Earth Day 2020 faces two challenges this year, rapid climate change and a pandemic. To help fight the pandemic Earth Day has gone digital so we all can take part in saving the planet and become prepared to prevent future disasters from happening.

Earth Day Network President Kathleen Rogers encourages people to rise up safely and responsibly using their voices to drive action online rather than in person. On Earth Day join in the 24-hour global digital mobilization Earthrise speaking up for the planet promoting environmental policies. Use the hashtags #EarthDay2020 and #EARTHRISE to voice your concerns. People already have started Making A Difference with the Earth Day Network’s 22 daily challenges leading up to Earth Day.

Everyone is encouraged to download the iPhone or Android Earth Challenge 2020 app and engage in citizen science to record the conditions in our local environment. The app also includes tools so you can help you protect the environment while discovering and learning about different environmental issues in your area. How well are you informed about the global environmental challenges we face? Test your knowledge with the Earth Day Quizzes.

Now is the time for citizens to call for a greater global ambition to tackle our climate crisis. Organize your own Earth Day event, preferably with hosting an Online Community Climate Discussion. Deliberate on ways to avoid local Climate Change inviting the neighbours in your community to participate. Educate local leaders on the severity of the problem if we don’t act now and show them working together can make a change.

Join the many participating in the Climate Change M.A.D. Movement on April 22, 2020, and have your say to the future of our only home, Planet Earth. Rapid change can happen as seen with the COVID-19 virus and how the world adapted to fighting the pandemic. The virus also has demonstrated that Climate Change is possible with the shutdown of China where they again had clear blue skies. Let us all work together doing our part making policies and procedures that prevent rapid climate change.

The old capitalist system of greed and profit needs to be replaced with a more equal, inclusive and sustainable economies and societies that are more resilient in the face of pandemics, climate change, and the many other global challenges we face.
