Be Sure to Enjoy the Holidays

Christmas is that time of year when people connect with family and friends and spread peace and joy to each other. This year without snow yet, it is hard to get into the Christmas spirit, even though the sites and sounds of the season have sprung up among us. Christmas lights are strung up to light the early dark nights. People are rushing about to buy gifts, send Xmas cards, and do holiday baking.

This is also the time when many are stressing out preparing for the season’s activities. Christmas isn’t about the consumerism and materialism with the competitiveness to impress, but rather a time to socialize with family, friends, and neighbours and making a difference for all, including yourself. For those that don’t create lists and are already shopping and preparing months ahead, the holiday season shouldn’t be a time to stress out with last minute plans and gift purchasing.

By changing the way we prepare and celebrate Christmas we can have a joyous and stress-less time. Buying fewer gifts reduces the time shopping in the hectic world of malls and businesses. We ourselves, have adopted the routine of drawing names between family members and having to buy only one greater valued gift instead of hunting down 6 cheap ones. Everyone then sends an email to everyone outlining some gift ideas helping gift selection easier.

Simplify your holiday events by not visiting every family member and friend and trying to take in too many seasonal gatherings. Be wise and choose only those that are of most interest to you so you can leisurely enjoy the holiday season. Also, if not everything works out, it is not the end of the world. I am not stressing out that the lights aren’t working in the Xmas village this year even though several others are. Remember it is not whether you have a done good job preparing for the holidays, but the comforting comrading with family, friends and fellow man. The recent fiasco with the Midfield Mobile Home Park shows us that we have a long way to go before we can get stable affordable housing in Calgary. Initially the city took over the private Midfield Park to prevent closure of the park and take care of the people.
