Calgary’s 3rd Annual Park(ing) Day
The city is inviting everyone to join them on September 21, 2018, for the 3rd Annual Park(ing) Day along Centre Street S.W. in the Downtown Core. PARK(ing) Day is an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into temporary Public Park Spaces. These temporarily reinvented public spaces serve to display a variety of innovative ways that Calgary’s urban spaces can be used.
The PARK(ing) Day project started in 2005 in San Francisco to provoke a critical examination of the values that generate the form of urban public space. They plugged the meter for a short-term lease to create a public pop-up urban park for all to enjoy. When the meter expired they rolled up the sod and packed away the bench and the tree. Before leaving they also gave the block a good sweep. PARK(ing) Day became a worldwide movement after many cities saw the single iconic photo of the pop-up park going viral on social media wanting to do the same.
Be sure not to miss out on this temporary public art transforming an everyday parking stall into an experiment showcasing the creative ways that an urban public space could be used. On Friday, September 21st between Noon and 6 pm visit Downtown and connect with the downtown community and your neighbours enjoying public parks created by local citizens.
